(Via Henry Makow) The Rapture and Other End Time Hoaxes

Henry Makow | April 10, 2024

Christians across North America believe that one day they will be raptured and will be spared the “Tribulation” and “Antichrist.”

They might be surprised to learn that the false doctrines of the rapture and dispensationalism were invented in 1830 by John Darby.

In fact, you won’t find the word “rapture” in the Bible. It’s a hoax. But this didn’t stop Cyrus Ingerson Scofield from stealing Darby’s deceptive doctrines and incorporating them in his Scofield Reference Bible which was first published in 1909 and revised in 1917. Labeled a charlatan and heretic by Christian author Stephen Sizeman, shyster Scofield even conferred a doctorate on himself in 1892. You can read more about this scoundrel here.
In spite of Scofield’s sordid background, the erroneous rapture doctrine was popularized by Hal Lindsay in his book The Late Great Planet Earth in 1970 and sensationalized by Tim LaHaye with his apocalyptic Left Behind series of books beginning in 1995.

  1. I am a fan of henry but the rapture is clearly in the bible in the NT – called the parousa and translated as rapture in some bibles . I doubt true believers will escape all the 7 year tribulation years but only the period of the wrath of God – the bowls of wrath etc
It has some sort of precedent in elijah and enoch being taken up . True christians are not subject to the wrath of God but can still be chastised

  2. I understand that Makow comes from a Jewish background, but has he ever confessed his faith in Christianity? Just curious about this.

  3. True the word Rapture is not found in the Greek. The root word “Rapturo” is found in the Latin Vulgate, and that is where the transliteration comes from.

    • True, and when I found this out from an Israeli preacher Amir Tsarfati that the word “rapture” comes from the Vulgate is when after many years I now do believe in the coming of the rapture, the “caught up” (harpazo in Greek). I just wish more true believers in Christ would do their homework and stop saying “the rapture is not in the Bible” stuff—if “rapturo” or rapture is in scripture, then yes, it is in the Bible, and true believers (most if not all) will be “caught up” with Christ in the clouds.

Likely pre-trib, because 2 Thessalonians says that (2:6-7) when “he” (the holy spirit) is “taken out of the way” (through the caught-up of true believers) is when the son of perdition or wicked will be revealed (the anti-Christ as host). Mid-trib? Maybe. Really, only God knows.

      • Could be before during or after tribulation but even jesus did not know the hour or day – but i dont think christians will escape the 1st 3 1/2 years without persecution

  4. Jesus comes TWICE – once like a thief in the night and once in judgement to destroy the wicked unbelievers at the end of the 7 year tribulation – everyone will see him in the clouds – even those who pierced him .

    The rapture :-
“so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. 40 Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left. 41Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left. 42 Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come”

    • your scripture here is referring to the coming of Jesus for the final judgment at the end of time. It doesn’t provide evidence for “the rapture”. It’s describing who will be saved and who won’t. There won’t be anyone left on earth after this judgement.

  5. Rapture can also mean a state of mind — like “euphoric” — perhaps that will take you to another (higher) dimension–but certainly not with a whole pile of sinful and sinning baggage with you. Just look around near and far with the world and system we have–who’s gonna make it?

  6. There are some who view bible prophecy as totally fulfilled- the bodily return of Christ having taken place at Pentecost when the Holy Spirit invaded & occupied His disciples & those of us from then on.

70AD was era of the tribulation.

If this is the case, it is clear that Christians have lost the ball within the last 1000 years once the enemy got hold of Gutenberg’s press…

  7. Reading the comments here, I am extremely disappointed that so many readers of this excellent website would believe in the rapture, which is absolutely a hoax, as the article states. It’s important to consider the relationship of these hoaxes to zionism, and to understand why the devil would want to promote them. The hoaxes I am referring to are the Scofield bible, the rapture, the idea that there’s no antichrist coming (perhaps because of St John’s writing that antichrist was already in the world), and the false doctrine that Jesus will rule the world for a thousand years in the future. Motive is extremely important when deception is promoted. The jews have rejected Jesus as the true messiah. This is because they wanted an earthly king/kingdom. State of Israel anyone? When they do get their “messiah”, he will be the antichrist, and he will fool most of the world into believing he is messiah. Christians will be tricked into believing this much easier if they believe in millenarianism and “christian zionism”. It will be crucial to recognize these eschatological deceptions to avoid worshipping antichrist and acceptance of the mark of the beast. These deceptions are for the purpose of getting Christians to support Israel, believe the antichrist is the messiah, take the mark of the beast, or completely let down their guard (in the case of the rapture myth) against false messiahs. It’s crystal clear from prophecy and from the bible that there will eventually be an antichrist, and that he will be a man who will rule the world, enforce the mark of the beast, and torture true Christians who refuse to worship him right before the 2nd coming of Christ for final judgment. It’s also been made clear that he will perform many amazing signs and wonders to deceive the world.
