Some historical background on how the US bases ended up in South Korea.
It is a very complicated, almost incomprehensible story, but basically due to the divisions created from the Cold War. To paraphrase General Patton at the end of WWII: ‘We fought the wrong enemy’ (implying that the real enemy was the the S.U., who incidentally, immediately switched from being the US allies to the US enemies as soon as WWII was over).
