At the same time, there’s a 90%+ chance of a very strong El Niño, putting even more pressure on harvests. A powerful El Niño can bring severe droughts and floods to major farming regions, damaging crops and reducing food production. And unlike oil, there is no strategic reserve of fertilizer waiting to fix the shortage, which makes the crisis even worse.

The nitrates we purchase at great expense are balanced by and connected to the nitrates we flush down the toilet and dump into rivers and oceans.
Smart farmers bulldoze their cow manure into a huge pile and cover it with tarps and let it ferment and then spread it over the pastures to prepare the soil for next year’s pastures. This has been known for millenia.
Everybody who composts, is laughing at everybody who doesn’t. Quit throwing away nutrients. Recycle. Throwing away nutrients is a luxury we can no longer afford.

The book describes a two-year-long natural cycle but I think the same thing can be achieved more effectively by pasteurizing your poop with a very large pressure cooker that will never be used for anything else, and a large gas stove, in about a few hours; just sayin’.

He reversed a system that paid farmers not to farm to prevent overproduction and a collapse in prices at harvest time.
This change (produce as much as possible) was the official policy that promoted mono-cropping. Each large farm only growing one crop.
Brazil led the world in soybean production but had wide scale poverty (food shortages) because the majority of their production was exported for animal feed.
No cow would ever eat soy beans in the wild, no human either.

Most of these huge corn growers are corporate farms and the corn is GMO so it can withstand being sprayed with glyphosphate (herbicide).

The subsidies for ethanol created a huge demand for GMO corn used to produce ethanol.
These small nations, some in the Caribbean, were told to stop producing their own food and build factories to employ the citizens and then just import the staple foods corn, rice, etc. .

Trump just issued an executive order to bypass the USDA regulations which prevent ranchers from butchering their own livestock.

Even a broken clock is sometimes right as Trump claims to be clamping down on the beef monopoly and helping out smaller ranchers. The situation is not entirely his fault of course but his policies in general are so inconsistent he is probably just doing this for political reasons, not altruism.
