1 Comment on IRAN MISSILES v. Israel’s Iron Dome & David’s Sling w/ MIT Prof. Ted Postol
Iran’s missiles use ballistic guidance — at that distance their accuracy is at best a couple of hundred meters — this is why you use large warheads, warheads with a large blast radius like nuclear warheads, with ballistic guidance.
To get meter accuracy you need satellite GPS guidance — only the US (GPS) and Russia (GLONASS) have those systems and experience using them for precise munitions guidance and targeting — no doubt the US shares the secure military GPS signal, which results in even more accurate position and timing info, with Israel.
There were reports that Iran asked Russia for satellite intelligence before the recent missile attack on Israel (I doubt Russia agreed to provide it) — there is also info in military publications that Iran is working to enable its missiles to use satellite guidance using its own satellites (Iran has a space program and already designs and launches its own satellites, as does Israel), which obviously has the potential to greatly improve their accuracy — along with Iran’s nuclear program, this will or should also be a concern of Israel and the US.
Another reason to reach some kind of resolution in the Middle East sooner rather than later.
