  1. Something similar happened in 1898 in Manila right after the Battle of Manila Bay. There were units of the Imperial German Navy in the bay that were trying to provoke the Americans into a shooting match before reinforcements could arrive from the U.S. Commodore Dewey was angry enough that he bellowed into the face of a German officer “You tell your admiral if he wants a fight he can have it NOW!!!” In the midst of this a Royal Navy ship anchored itself between the American ships and the Germans … and the Kriegsmarine had the good sense not to start a fight with the Queen Victoria’s (the Kaiser’s maternal grandmother) entire, largest in the world Royal Navy.
