I-Team Sources: Body found in barrel at Lake Mead outside Las Vegas

8 NEWS NOW — Boaters discovered a body Sunday on the shore at Lake Mead, sources told the 8 News Now I-Team.

The body was concealed in a barrel near Hemenway Harbor.



A news release from the National Park Service said the body was discovered around 3 p.m. The I-Team first reported the discovery on Sunday afternoon.

A photo shared with the I-Team showed what looked like skeletal remains in the barrel. The barrel looked to have been stuck in the mud and may have been exposed due to low water levels.

“We were docking our boat to go home and heard a woman scream,” witness Shawna Hollister said. “My husband walked over and found the body. His shirt and belt were the only thing we could see over his decomposing bones.” […]


Lake Mead Barrel Body Was Shot, Police Say, as Second Barrel Discovered

A second barrel was discovered by a local news crew reporting on the discovery of the first barrel.

NBC 4 (AP) — The body found inside a barrel on the newly exposed bottom of Lake Mead after the lake’s level was depleted amid drought is that of a man who was shot, police said Tuesday, as a news crew reportedly found a second barrel.

The killing probably happened between the mid-1970s and the early 1980s because the victim was wearing shoes that were manufactured during that period, said homicide Lt. Ray Spencer, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.

The first barrel was found Sunday in the Lake Mead National Recreational Area by boaters who informed authorities. …

The Las Vegas affiliate station 8 News Now’s I-Team reportedly found a second barrel while covering the news of the first barrel discovery, and alerted police Monday.

The second barrel, which appeared to be empty, was found a couple hundred feet from the other and was also discovered onshore, the station reported. […]
