Started losing my jobs to them a few years later and then all of a sudden they were managers and buying up property and becoming landlords and that was the end of Silicon Valley.
There’s a middle class; it’s just, it’s Indian, not white.
I have no problems with Indians as individuals but I don’t think they should be telling me how to do my job, seeing as many of us have been administering computers longer than many of them have been alive … we invented the technologies they now think of as their own … and the only reason we are reporting to them instead of vice versa is because they sleep eight to an apartment, and can afford to work for less.
I remember coming onto a project where Wells Fargo had taken over Wachovia, I think it was. WFB had brought in Indian contractors to export the data from the Wachovia databases. The contractors brought in other contractors. The other contractors brought in subcontractors. Every single !@#$ one was an Indian. WFB finally got fed up and called some high-end firm that does US military contracting – it might have been C3. The contractor hired me.

There were so many !@#$ Indians that he and I – the top people – were crammed into one tiny cube, together, and we could barely hear one another. And this guy was, like, 6’4″ or something, ex-military, no rocket scientist but definitely a not-stupid. I liked him. But sharing a cube with him was not a trivial act.
I looked over the shell script the Indians were running and it was incredible, like something that a committee of fifty or a hundred people might produce. Basically the problem was too many cooks in the kitchen and none of them knew how to cook but they were sure that if they just kept adding cooks to the mix it would turn into soup Real Soon Now.
It really only needed two people. A systems administrator to write the !@#$ shell script and a database administrator to write the SQL queries. The other 75 or so people could be sent back to India or their contracting agency or whatever, we didn’t need them.
Improperly written, every time the program hit a bug it had to start over – and it took a couple of days or maybe even the better part of a week just to do one run. But properly written, with checkpoints and some sort of tracking of its internal state so that it could be interrupted and start back up where it had left off, the entire task could be done in a few weeks (the effort had been in the pipe for maybe six months or a year, when I got involved).
At this point, the guy I was working with got a call from HQ, that I hadn’t completed my pee test – and I realized that because they had gone through a military contracting agency, that I was compelled to submit to urine testing.
Alas, the complexity of being forced to live in Humboldt County, where we could barely afford the rent, while doing temp gigs for shit wages in the Bay Area, 300 miles away, had interfered with my taking any pee tests; and, to be honest, I didn’t want to pee in a bottle for anyone and I didn’t want to spend $40 for a bag of fake pee and lie.
(Which was unfortunate, because it was an interesting gig and I needed the !@#$ money.)
This project was occurring at a nondescript office building in San Leandro. I was 350 miles from home, just for the record. I commuted that far, each week, and farther, to pay the rent. Others have traveled farther; one on gig I met a coworker who commuted from Oklahoma. Car dwellers, all of us. Working, white collar, and functionally homeless.
So, anyway, he had to let me go, because I was not compliant with the HR bullshit. He was as unhappy about that as I was, because he had the solution right there, sitting in his cube, knee to knee, ready to dive in.
Wikipedia says WFB took over Wachovia in 2008, so maybe it was early 2009.
I did some another gig at Wells Fargo a few years later (no pee test this time) and by 2015 Wells Fargo Bank was maybe 50% Indian.
Based on what I saw in that one room of contractors in San Leandro, India is no threat to us. It’s only a matter of time until it collapses under its own weight, rotten from top to bottom.
Microsoft is showing signs of this sort of decay. I mean, twenty years ago it was inconceivable for Windows to do an update and disable fundamental things like audio. There is a real failure to test the software before releasing it, here, that would have been inconceivable in decades past – it’s like buying a blouse and having it fall apart in the wash from shitty thread, and this won’t be tolerated for long.
But, geeze, we coulda done this a quarter of a century ago and saved ourselves a shitload of trouble. Some of us have been watching peoples’ laundry fall apart in the dryer for a quarter of a century and wondering when y’all would quit blaming the dryer. We’re nt too bright, either.

They not only adopt and internalize the demands of the dominant system as personal ambition, they believe this servitude makes them better than everyone else who hasn’t.

i have worked in software engineering for over 30 years and worked with all kinds of people and the indians are like most foreigners or first generation types. Don’t believe I have seen any total fakers and alot are hard working (especially the h1b’s who can’t afford to lose their job) but also don’t think i have worked with any that were amazing. Americans are much more varied….very few, but some have been total fakers, but the top coders I have known have all been American and almost all male. Since I am of mixed race, I might have resented the all american teams I was on….but being on all indian and all chinese teams cured me of that. American teams are competitive but the most egalitarian and talent based. Asian teams are much more class, politics, and corrupt.

When I was growing up, everything was marked “made in Japan”.
Then, ten years old, I moved to San Francisco and met actual Japanese people and went to the Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park (back before it became a tourist trap) and was introduced to Japanese culture and it was pretty cool, man.
At that time, the Chinese were the underdogs. But by the time I grew up the Chinese were a force to be reckoned with in the Bay Area. There were lots of Chinese in Silicon Valley. Some of them were from China and some of them had grown up here.
I never had a problem with the Chinese. They were part of the team and we all seemed to be working towards the same goals. They didn’t cheat and they didn’t try to pack the team with Chinese players. They kept the board level and followed the rules and made sure everyone else did the same. I have usually enjoyed working with Chinese people.
I cannot say the same for Indians. Although I have had good relationships with Indian coworkers, all the way back to my Oracle days, and the men are handsome, and the women are beautiful, and many of the people who come to the United States are the cream of the crop … after a while, you realize that India is not sending us their best and brightest. Many of the people I have had to work with struck me as shifty and playing a different game.
The way that an Indian manager will often abuse his or her position to employ more indians, at the expense of the larger organization, is almost predictable. And the way they seek to use their influence to change circumstances to improve things for themselves at the expense of other groups is similarly predictable.
I’m going to paint with a broad brush here and suggest that India suffers from a tribal perspective upon things that prevents them from seeing the big picture and acting upon in in an effective manner – I mean, how hard is it to organize to pick up the fucking trash? – and they bring values to our shores that are a threat to our way of life.
To be brutally honest, Americans aren’t too good at picking up the trash, either. I expect most Northern Europeans find Americans as disgusting as most Americans find India.
I hear China and Japan and many other countries are as neat as pins and I admire the Asians for their meticulous approach to maintaining their commonwealths. We have a lot to learn from Asia.
One of my favorite memories is noticing an elderly Chinese woman in San Francisco cleaning the family pickup after her husband and her son returned from their construction job. She also hosed out the garbage can. I’d never seen anyone clean their garbage can before! I tried to imagine my own mother washing a car or a garbage can and I failed completely; my mother was far too haughty to do such a thing.

Mostly kind of hard to refute this.
Given the amount of preferential loans, tax breaks (I am told their profits are practically tax free for several years) and such that these people get upon entering and gaining citizenship (perks given after the “immigration reform act” of the Johnson era) to obtain businesses (mainly in former native-born minority owned businesses in low-income neighborhoods). I wonder if they would have these businesses in such numbers if they had to work first for years, save, invest and all that? Or if the numbers would be the same if those benefits were open to all applicants, regardless or not if they are fresh off the boat or native born? As far as I have seen, they (at least those from India) don’t employ anyone from those neighborhoods that the businesses serve (as opposed to the former owners who were from that community) but instead seem to favor immediate family and extended family members. Seems like welfare for basically “gimmegrants”. Someone should do a study and run the statistics, for I think the results would be interesting and infuriating simultaneously.
