100k russians have been killed in the great satans proxy war with HIMARS, etc. Putin would be a fool not to take this chance to reply in kind, sinking the carrier from which any attack planes took off. And more. But the only thing that will stop drumpf is if maduro takes hostages, the americunt public will demand a halt to the war.
Too bad Putin couldn’t be bothered to do the same for Assad (who wasn’t on the other side of the world like Maduro is).
Personally, I think Putin has more morals than Maduro, thus WWIII is a huge stretch for Putin to start the war over Maduro’s drug transportation getting whacked.

US might be hoping that the russians support venezuela, at least in a minimal way. that way, when the us bombs venezuela, they can crow that they also “hit” russia and “humiliated” Putin.
Putin should either stay entirely out, or go in with the best non-nuclear weapons systems, and provide guidance/intel for them. but let the venezuelans pull the trigger. take out a carrier or two, or better, the whole US task force. make the case, perhaps privately, that this is reciprocity for the US supplying and guiding weapons for the Ukies against russian assets. the majority of the world, sick of the US, will side with Russia.
The US thinks that the russians are weak and will accept the violation of any red line.
this might be the only way to put a stop to that misconception.
