Was Mesolithic Doggerland the Inspiration for the Legends of Atlantis and The Flood?

Doggerland: The remains of a prehistoric oak loom in the mud of the Severn estuary at low tide, near the Welsh town of Goldcliff. As the sea progressed the Mesolithic forests of northern Europe gradually died from the intrusion of salt water. Human beings had to move to higher areas, until the sea also engulfed them. The theory that Mesolithic-Doggerland was the source of the legends of Atlantis, The Flood and creation is, of course, speculative but does contain certain compelling points, especially in terms of context. Plato said that Atlantis laid beyond “beyond the Pillars of Hercules,” or Gibraltar in the Atlantic. Doggerland was located in post Ice Age North Sea well outside of the Mediterranean. However, as a bird flies, Doggerland is much closer to Greece than more far-placed Atlantic locations that have been offered up.

Mesolithic Doggerland was not a “civilization”; but for that epoch, it was quite advanced and was situated on some of the best real estate in Eurasia.

Plato is known to have freely borrowed some of his allegories and metaphors from older traditions. Written in 360 B.C., Plato (428-347 B.C.) introduced Atlantis in “Timaeus.” The dialogues claim to quote Solon, who visited Egypt between 590 and 580 B.C. They state that Solon translated Egyptian records of Atlantis. Alexandria would have been the center and repository of collective history in the ancient world. Arguably, Atlantis and The Flood would have represented a major collective memory passed down from an epic event. But what event?

Adding to the mystery comes a revelation that up to 70 percent of British men are related to the Egyptian Pharaoh Tutankhamen, geneticists in Switzerland said. Did a group of Doggerlander descendants make their way to Egypt, end up ruling and, most certainly, taking their epic memories with them?

Plato also described Doggerland accurately from what we know today, saying that the Plain to the South-Southwest dominated the sea by a vertical drop, and that at the other side of the drop (North and East), the Plain went down in a gentle slope.

More color and a good match came from Diodorus Siculus, a Greek historian of the first century B.C., sourcing Hecateus of Miletus, the first geographer of the fourth century B.C., states:

“Hecateus and a few others claim that, beyond the country of the Celts, there is in the Ocean an island no smaller than Sicily. It stretches Northwards and is inhabited by the Hyperboreans. They are so called because they live beyond the lands where Boreas, the North wind, blows.

Doggerland, now submerged under the North Sea, was the “True Heart of Europe” in the Mesolithic, according to Richard Bates of the University of St. Andrews. It was a paradise for that era, with the populations multiplying and doing very well. It would have been one of the larger and prospering human populations of Europe.

Lakes lapped gently in the marshes, rivers winding their course through lush landscapes of grasses and bushes. Food was plentiful. The waters teemed with fish and shellfish, birds nested in the reeds, berry bushes covered the banks. There were many rich villages of country folk, the meadows furnished ample nutriment to all the animals both tame and wild. Timber of various sizes and descriptions was abundantly sufficient for the needs of all and every craft. Doggerlanders were fishermen and would have been skilled at making functioning seaworthy boats.

After the Ice Age receded, populations migrated from the Iberian Refugio and moved into this prime real estate stating about 8,000 B.C. In the context of the next several millennium, life was much more advanced and comfortable than their Ice Age ancestors or others scattered around Europe who barely survived. For about two millennium, Doggerland had a good run by any standard.

The Flood Story

Gradually, as the ice melted, the North Sea rose and Doggerland was inundated. It was gradual at first, and the inhabitants constructed dykes to preserve their fertile lands. Plato referenced dykes.

There was an abrupt 0.25- to 0.5-meter sea-level jump sometime between 6300-6200 B.C., marking the effects of the catastrophic melt-water release from Lake Agassiz that triggered the so-called “8200 calBP” cold event around the Atlantic (e.g. LeGrande 2006; Clare, et al). Lake Agassiz was an ice dam lake in Canada. It would have poured into the Hudson Bay and raised the sea level of the North Atlantic.

At this point, with decades of lead time and the lands shrinking, the Doggerlanders began to resort to boats for shorter relocation trips to the European and British coasts.

Next, and within +/- 100 years after the Agassiz inundation, a giant ice dam that once spanned roughly from Dover to Calais and retained a lake to its Northeast catastrophically failed, resulting in yet a second flood that opened the English Channel.

Within another 100 years, the mother of all floods hit from the Storegga Slide tsunami. Three epic floods over a few hundred years at the location of the best real estate in Mesolithic times would all but guarantee flood, lost civilization and Ark voyage legends of a most memorable kind.

The map at left shows Doggerland as a massive plain in about 7500 B.C. The map at right shows the residual island about 6200 B.C., after the English Channel opened up and just before the mega-tsunami hit. Notice that besides Dogger Island, there are a string of good-sized islands in the English Channel and North of the Rhine. Additionally, low-laying land that once jutted out into the North Sea and attached to England would have been inundated.

On one autumn day about 6000 to 6200 B.C., the men of the Mesolithic had just retired to their winter quarters when one of the greatest catastrophes in European history crashed down upon them. If any event qualifies as an epic flood in pre-history, this was it.

From “Doggerland Lost“:

“The end came in a flash: 8 to 10 meter tsunamis raced through the North Sea. In the sea bottom in front of the coast of Norway, huge masses of mud slid down a 1000 meter slope – an event known as the Storegga Slide – and gave rise to the enormous waves.”

In their work, Jon Hill and his colleagues reconstructed the past landscape of Doggerland on their computers.

“Large parts of Doggerland were then less than five meters above sea-level. The fate of the island proved a lucky break for the coastlines behind them: Doggerland acted as a wave-breaker, so that the German North Sea coast, the Netherlands and Southern England were exposed to tsunamis of only one meter.”

The chart shows the various impacts that sent Doggerland to an Atlantis style watery grave, including the tsunami and mother of floods transpiring in hours. The tsunami manifested itself as a giant wave on the coastline and an unusually extensive flood in the interior.

This does not necessarily imply that all were killed immediately — although given the likely rapidity and scale of the event, a significant number of people would almost certainly have been caught and drowned by the inexorably cold and rising waters, while many others would have been displaced. Productive coastal areas would have been devastated, shellfish beds destroyed and covered by sand, together with any fixed fishing facilities. Any stored food meant to last over the winter may also have been lost (cf. Spikins 2008), with subsequent starvation among survivors.

The final abandonment of the remaining remnants of Doggerland as a place of permanent habitation by Mesolithic populations was rapid as well as epic. The idea that the survivors would have left on boats and barges to the coast of England is likely. An island-hopping evacuation to the less-impacted modern-day Low Countries and French coast would also have been in the works. An entire population would have had to renew and relocate.

Doggerland: far more advanced than previously thought.

One of the larger paternal haplogroups R1b1b2a1a (mine) is associated with many DNA samples taken from the Dogger Banks. Today, this Doggerlander gene is found in England, the Low Countries and coastal France, where it reaches levels of one-third of the modern population. In pre-modern migration times, say 1500 A.D., it would have been even higher.

Modern Descendants of Doggerlanders

Fourth century historian Ammianus Marcellinus, relying on a lost work by Timagenes, a historian writing in the first century B.C., who writes that the Druids of Gaul said that part of the inhabitants of Gaul had migrated there from distant islands: “The Drasidae (Druids) recall that a part of the population is indigenous but others also migrated in from islands and lands beyond the Rhine.” (Res Gestae 15.9) Note: The Rhine enters the North Sea in southern Netherlands.

Welsh: “The lake of Llion burst, flooding all lands. Dwyfan and Dwyfach escaped in a mastless ship with pairs of every sort of living creature. They landed in Prydain [Britain] and repopulated the world” (Gaster, pp. 92-93).

Scandinavian: “Oden, Vili, and Ve fought and slew the great ice giant Ymir, and icy water from his wounds drowned most of the Rime Giants. The giant Bergelmir escaped, with his wife and children, on a boat made from a hollowed tree trunk. From them rose the race of frost ogres. Ymir’s body became the world we live on. His blood became the oceans” (Sturluson, p. 35).

Celtic: “Heaven and Earth were great giants, and Heaven lay upon the Earth so that their children were crowded between them, and the children and their mother were unhappy in the darkness. The boldest of the sons led his brothers in cutting up Heaven into many pieces. From his skull they made the firmament. His spilling blood caused a great flood which killed all humans except a single pair, who were saved in a ship made by a beneficent Titan. The waters settled in hollows to become the oceans. The son who led in the mutilation of Heaven was a Titan and became their king, but the Titans and gods hated each other, and the king titan was driven from his throne by his son, who was born a god. That Titan at last went to the land of the departed. The Titan who built the ship, whom some consider to be the same as the king Titan, went there also” (Sproul, pp. 172-173).

The stories, tales and legends of such a monumental flood and displacement would have spread all over Eurasia, and even elsewhere, as a universal collective memory. Sea levels were rising globally during this era, and the Black Sea also experienced a flooded coastal zone. Indeed, variations of the flood accounts are found in many locations, religions and cultures, not just Sumeria and the Bible (see full list). But the 6000 B.C. Storegga Slide and outcomes would have been the epic mother of all events.

  1. Timely post for what’s recently crossed our radar – a presentation on Veritas by ‘giantologist’ Jim Vieira (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=czx9lpor2sU) focused on the sinking of Atlantis as provoking the exodus of races of giants. . Vieira’s interview exposes an evident conspiracy or cover-up whereby so many skeletal remains have gone to the Smithsonian only to disappear. Their own records acknowledge numerous donations. There’s a vast paper trail explored in Vieira’s book ‘Giants on Record’ including articles in major papers as well as county and city records all around the US as well as photos, sketches and other illustrations throughout 18th and 19th century journalism. Followed by some reason by a recent hush on the issue.

However beginning with the Bible and throughout all accounts a push is noted among giants to mate with women of normal size (likely fatal for them). There are records of beings 25’ tall in antiquity, with most reports of more recent times describing people of the seven to ten foot tall range. Giants are understood to be mortal (e.g. Goliath). Native American histories voice acute hatred of this frequently cannibalistic, slave-holding breed in many cases (some are said to be benevolent). They were greatly feared for being superior to homo sapien intelligence. Being evidently rational, and realizing how 1) the normal human race greatly outnumbered them and 2) they had made enemies of the smaller race, they may have chosen to downsize in stature in order to conceal themselves. It’s hard to find enough to eat, probably, if you’re eighteen feet tall.

Vieira seems to lean towards giants having been exterminated, most recently by the British in Patagonia in 1892. Are they really gone? Consider the very last published thoughts of the late Jim Marrs. An excerpt from the third to the last paragraph of the late Jim Marrs’ last book ‘The Illuminati’ (p. 348):

    – Considering the previously described connections between certain wealthy families – particularly the Rockefellers and the Rothschilds, who have shown such interest in Sumerian lore and artifacts – the idea that at least some among the ruling elite may not be entirely human should not be summarily dismissed. After all, it can be clearly demonstrated that the policies and practices of such families and their corporations do not appear to be in the best interests of this world’s citizens or environment. The evidence of ancient, non-human visitation is compelling, almost overwhelming. Cave drawings, cuneiform tablets of stone, Biblical descriptions, ancient writings and anomalous artifacts around the world attest to the reality of such a presence down through history. Since it has been shown that a mere handful of bloodline-fixated individuals hiding behind corporate fronts are seeking to control the wealth and power of the planet, it may be time we ask in all seriousness: Are they even us?

Along with the author of this blog (as stated on another post) we have long regarded alleged UFO activity as fraudulent (problems with anthropomorphizing space travelers (who may not need a protective manufactured shell) among innumerable other issues). But as to other kinds of beings among us, giants are cited not only in the Bible but all kinds of ancient literature, almost ubiquitously mentioned in histories of native Americans as well as mention of both skeletons and live sightings by every early western hemisphere explorer for the past millennium.

What if giants are hidden in plain sight? Mutated into families who appear to be like the majority of the human race? As to the Smithsonian scuttling skeletons, “cui bono?” Who would want this issue suppressed? Did giants really die off? What if the fiends we see defrauding the human race are actually giants? It would explain their penchant for cannibalism etc. Could Hilary have – as was reported in ancient times – double rows of teeth?

  2. Thanks for another interesting article. There’s a very interesting book called “Where Troy Once Stood” by Iman Wilkins covering a slightly later period circa 1200 BC, where the author locates Troy in South East England, and many place names now associated with the Eastern Mediterranean along the eastern fringes of Europe. The book also explains the Odyssey as being a initiation journey for initiates to the mystery school which took the traveller from Hades (the mouth of the Rhine) all the across the Atlantic to what is now Cuba – and back.
It’s very well researched and referenced… and very controversial (some book sellers have it as history, others a fiction), but very readable and I’d highly recommend it.
A short comment cannot do it justice.

  3. The ‘Tower of Babel’ event happened in 3450 B.C….. Subsequently, Marduk/Ra returned to Egypt from Babylon, deposed his brother Ningishzidda/Thoth and sent him into exile.

Thoth went to the Americas where he was known as Quetzalcoatl (amongst other names)… The Olmec calendar, most commonly known as the ‘Mayan Calendar’, begins with his exile in 3113 B.C. ……. the same time as the 1st Dynasty in Egypt began under Marduk/Ra.

Ningishzidda/Thoth was the architect of the Giza complex 13,000 years ago and subsequently the pyramids of the Americas 8,000 years later.

All of this information is readily available on the internet and at book stores.

    • wow, trying to reply to Thor’s Hammer immediately but have a quote to make and comment on.

No, Thor’s Hammer, that’s not Thoth who went to Mexico… if anyone it was Bergelmir, or someone from the Wars in Eire and Britain and the Isle of Man when some of the ‘elves’ and the ‘giants’ fled across the seas….. and thence according to oral traditions of the Maori which say, and there is evidence of their villages/buildings and such indeed in Aotearoa but the Maori do not allow excavations of any serious kind, and it’s only the Maori of all the world’s peoples where nobles have facial tattoos… as did the Ancient Irish of all races of beings then around….. of the same Celtic-looking-type designs, no less. Look for the “Skeletons In the Closet” videos… that’s the first one, there’s a few.

Where Thoth went was to Harran, Upper Chaldea, where I think perhaps still in the ground beneath the Temple of the Seven Planets, now in ruins along with the once-famous Temple of the Moon God(des) Sin, where a central spiral staircase descended into the vaults of the Great Library of Hermes Trismestigus – Hermes and Thoth being cognates…. and near the Serapeum there was a temple of Hermes. No accident, as what was in Alexandria included copies of what remained of Nineveh’s once-great library and no doubt also that of the Library of Great Hermes beneath the Temple of the Seven Planets. I doubt the ancients of Harran, which arose after the Phaeton meteor/comet/ion bolt that created the Hiawatha Impact Crater in 11,800 BC… read the Timaeus about that, I don’t have time/space to recount what it says or all that caused, but that area is where surivors gathered when they came back above ground again and gathered where they had to live among the ‘beasts of the fields” – as it also says in the Egyptian materials in the Kolbrin Bible…….

But re that, here’s that quote that struck me as wildly wrong:

“Written in 360 B.C., Plato (428-347 B.C.) introduced Atlantis in “Timaeus.” The dialogues claim to quote Solon, who visited Egypt between 590 and 580 B.C. They state that Solon translated Egyptian records of Atlantis. Alexandria would have been the center and repository of collective history in the ancient world. ”

Why would Alexandria be such a repository in 590/580 BC. Alexander hadn’t been born yet, nor founded Alexandria, and it was only until after it was founded that Ptolemy founded the Serapeum, i.e. the University/Library of Alexandria of which the glass case holding Alexander’s divine physical form was kept… I saw a story recently that on that site exactly after the depredations of the Conversion started by Theodosius II after the assassination (I believe) of the Emperor Julian, who sought to restore official “paganism” and died in a ‘riding accident’, a church of the Evangelist St. Mark appeared with the body of the Saint as a relic….. in a glass case. thence stolen by a Venetian pirate and now lying in the Sanmarco cathedral/basilica in Venice. Wow, huh? Where the catafalque is, and it would not have been destroyed, remains to be seen/ found.

So….. other than the Biblical focus of western thinking and not the wider view beyond the Greco-Roman-Hebraic chronology Science still thinks in terms of…..where that center and repository of collective history would have been is in the Great Library of Hermes in Harran, in the Temple of the Seven Planets.

The originals of much of what was in the Serapeum, in other words….. much was probably in the Great Library of Carthage, i.e. in all the houses of once-mighty Carthage like the Great Library of Timbuktu, since the Carthaginians were Punics and Phoenicia was not-accidentally where navigating by the stars is from. Why? Because it was the astronomers of Harran where astrology and all that was born (not in Lower Chaldea – Sumeria/Babylonia), likewise it was at Ugarit that cuneiform first appeared, which I think is now in Israel (?) near the Lebanese border – also Upper Chaldea, not Lower..

The other thing that always strikes me about all the specialists who don’t see what a generalist sees is that water levels DID wipe out all records of what existed in the lowlands/lost lands before the Hiawatha Impact/Phaeton even which launched the Younger Dryas…..

I hadn’t heard the Gaulish account before, nor had anyone stipulated a certain passage from Snorri Sturluson before about this, I’ve only read parts of the Younger Edda, only the creation where the giants whom the gods suckered into building the walls of Asgardr (giants knew how to build in stone, and a frozen ice bridge or two led to the site… so I’d go looking for a stone structure near maybe where the Elbe and another river formed an island that in winter only could be reached by ice… during the Fimbulvetr.

Well, I think y’all better read THIS and I’ll make a quote and comments following the link:

      http://www.canada.com/technology/Massive+Canadian+melt+have+triggered+flood+biblical+proportions/3954124/story.html

” tentatively linking the 6,000 BC Canadian gusher to flooding in the Persian Gulf region and the ancient flood story in the Epic of Gilgamesh, which scholars see as a possible model for the later biblical account of Noah’s flood.

“Who knows how well the Epic of Gilgamesh or the Bible is really reflecting the real world,” Teller told Postmedia News at the time. “But the floor of the Persian Gulf is really, really flat in the middle. And like dumping a cup of water on a table — or even a thimbleful — it will rush across the tabletop to the far end.”

Rose, referring to recent archeological finds in Oman and Yemen, said there is now evidence suggesting a human presence in the southern part of the Arabian Peninsula as early as 100,000 years ago.”

….. has it occurred to NONE of you that Dilmun was above water at the time of the Epic of Gilgamesh?? And THAT is where the great hero went in search of his friend and met Utnapishtim (Noah) there, who had survived the flood of 11,800 BC (the Hiawatha/Phaeton event in the Timaeus)….and the art of Jiroft has all the same symbology connected with that Epic….. 5000 years before the rise of Sumer.

So snap out of your boxes…. and another source that keeps on getting overlooked is the Mandaean account… might be worthwhile looking into Yazidi accounts and also those of Axum, should any be discovered available for study (much in Eithopia remains secret, like the Ark of the Covenant, which only one monk per lifetime may see), but Harran is unexcavated, so is that new city in the desert they can’t get to due to it being a warzone (near the Tibesti I think but apparently within Egypt… I wish *someone* would provide the coordinates….. ) and at Ubar in the Empty Quarter and, well, in Yemen, though looking there right now has the same issues with war, don’t it? And then consider the Hejaz, most of it closed to infidels other than Jeddah, and what is there; Hindus maintain, or some do, that what’s inside the Qa’aba is a lingam, and Mecca had been a complex of temples of Hindu deities….. so what’s underneath there??

Then there’s Oman….. and the Strait of Hormuz… and all the lands lying beneath the sea……Dawarka, for instance (the real one), and the appearance of Thracian civilization shortly after 6000 BC, and more such….

Open your eyes and get out of the boxes of preconceptions and wishes and Bible-referencing when there’s so much more out there… the Mahabharata and Rig Veda would be good places to start.. and in in the Library of Thoth-Hermes in Harran beneath the Seven Planets… which I believe, maybe seeing them approach or seeing the beacon of the glowing crystal globe atop the Temple of the Moon extinguished/shattered by the Mongols (1076 AD I think), same as in Alexandria where the priests of Asar-Apis (Serapis) quickly transformed the vault where Alexander’ body lay in state into a Church of St. Mark, the masters/priests of Hermes/Thoth hurriedly hid the central staircase into the library before the Mongols showed up….. it may still be there (!!!!).

Alexandria’s library I believe was smaller, other than it also having had many works from Bactria (Afghanistan) and India…….. Buddhist works probably and other Indian-sourced literature on the Divine or ?

That’s just scraping what I can see you all are missing …..

  4. I really enjoy Nick Zentner’s video lectures. In one of them (can’t remember which), he posits that Northwest tribes had a high probability of being witness to ice age mega floods.

    • Definitely- most likely was Lake Agassiz – would have gotten people’s attention a thousand miles away. Drained in two directions- also carved out St .Lawrence riverway.
